Atkins is the largest engineering and design consultancy in the UK, the largest multidisciplinary consultancy in Europe and one of the largest design firms in the world.
Our Water Operations team is one of the largest in the UK and with clients including high-profile utility companies, local authorities and independent businesses.
An additional Technical Leader is required to work with the MEP Operations Director and two incumbent Technical Leaders, with the primary objective of supporting the management of the MEP business stream. The role will be based in Bristol and will be responsible for regional management of the offices in the western half of the country in association with local team leaders.
Requirements
The successful candidate must be able demonstrate the following;
- Degree qualification with a Mechanical bias and a Chartered engineer
- Significant experience of working in the Water Industry, in both potable and foul water
- Experience of other sectors such as Nuclear would be an advantage
- Experience of managing teams and staff
- Project team leadership
- Financial management
- Strong inter-personal skills
- Robust commercial, financial and consultancy awareness
- A track record of winning and delivering engineering projects
- Stakeholder management
The Technical Leader will have a demonstrable record in the following:
Commercial & Project Delivery
- Ability to lead profitable project delivery
- Applying business and QSE procedures to ensure financial and operational robustness
- Strategic thinking, planning & organising
- Ability to develop a strong relationship with client to reinforce our technical capability and business identity
- Ability to identify and employ innovation in the development of leading edge processes and technologies and apply them to business strategy
- Ability to assess the viability of business opportunities, lead and/or assist in the preparation of major bids
- Ability to understand business imperatives, our resource capability and prioritise work load according to Business needs
- Ability to prepare an effective strategy, including targets and performance indicators as appropriate
- Work with the Operations Director and other Technical Leaders to assist in the preparation of the MEP Business Plan
- Liaise with National Business Coordinator to manage staff workload within business stream
Management of People
- Experience of leading a team and promoting teamwork
- Experience of motivating people to improve performance
- Identifying recruitment needs necessary to attain Business strategy
Communication
- Capable of clearly communicating to the Mechanical, Electrical & Process Engineering leadership team the key business goals and performance
- Strong written and oral communication, including presentations to both senior managers and staff teams
- Ability to participate in vocalising views and challenging strategy
- Ability to organise and chair effective management meetings
- Ability to represent Atkins at conferences and other industry events
Relevant Experience
- A demonstrable track record in the UK MEP Industry with experience of establishing, leading and maintaining effective technical and business management groups
- Demonstrable experience of Mechanical, Electrical & Process Engineering in the Water and Industrial sectors
- Demonstrable experience of commercial processes and operational delivery at project, framework and business level
- A strong track record with resource planning and performance management
- An established industry profile preferably in the field of Mechanical, Electrical & Process Engineering would be an advantage
- Experience of working with an off-shoring facility would be an advantage
Responsibilities
To take a leadership role in supporting the Operations Director and working with the other Technical Leaders in delivery and development of the national Mechanical, Electrical & Process Engineering Business Stream. The position will take a leadership role in:
- Managing people and resources including motivating people to improve performance, carry out staff appraisals and line management of staff
- Developing technical best practice
- Leading operational and commercial delivery
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with Operational Directors, Client Delivery Directors and Managers, Human Resources and with account managers and directors elsewhere in the Group
- Aim to maintain personal productivity level of 80%
- Support the strengthening of the Mechanical, Electrical & Process Engineering business stream to ensure it is profitable, sustainable and scaleable
- Establish, lead and maintain national Best Practice Groups from business and technical expertise held within Water Operations and wider Atkins
- Lead, direct and maximise delivery of the Mechanical, Electrical & Process Engineering business across water operations nationally, develop new business in the UK with the support of local Client Delivery Directors
- Represent Atkins within the water industry as the national figurehead responsible for reinforcing our national wastewater infrastructure identity
- Support the Operations Director with recruitment, performance management, personal development and training according to a clear resource plan for the Mechanical, Electrical & Process Engineering business
- Support the Operational Director in developing and leading business strategy and growth through the participation and contribution as a member of the Mechanical, Electrical & Process Engineering Leadership team. To integrate with the wider Water Operations and Water and Environment business and other parts of Atkins as required to support the identity and values of the Atkins brand
- Act as Project Director / Project Manager on significant projects to ensure work is delivered to a consistently high quality
- Adopt and employ Atkins and Water Operations systems and processes to ensure a robust approach to resource management, technical quality and commercial and financial performance
- Maintain and monitor a professional and leading edge approach to the application of Health and Safety and CDM in the administration of business duties
- Undertaking technical work, including reviews and design, on a variety of projects for the water and industrial sectors
- Project management on a variety of engineering projects including scoping, feasibility and design
