“I first heard about the WISE Bus when it visited my Secondary School in about 1995. I took part in the hands-on science and technology activities scheduled on-board the WISE bus. I was able to try out equipment such as computers (believe it or not was a new experience back then!!) and work on 2D Computer Aided Design packages and was involved with a small design and make project to gain practical experience.
The WISE Bus visited me before I had chosen my GCSE options and I believe that the encouragement received from the WISE at that time positively influenced me when selecting Engineering as a subject I wanted to study further. I studied an Intermediate GNVQ in Engineering and then at Advanced Level – both were passed with Distinction, which created the foundation for my Engineering career.
As Mechanical and Electrical Trainee Engineer within Norwest Holst Construction (in the Water Utilities Department) saw me project manage and co-ordinate the M&E elements of water and sewage treatment in the Derbyshire area. Though my job role, I was offered a position on a relevant HE Mechanical Engineering course at Derby College and incorporated theory with hands on practical experience.
I am now an Engineering Lecturer at Derby College and having returned to inspire young students at the start of their Engineering and life journeys.
My most memorable moment about the WISE Bus was feeling more confident and inspired that technology, engineering and science as a whole; was a place for women to be - and more importantly be at the forefront within.
I would just like to say a big thank you to the WISE Campaign………..keep up the good work!”
