Work Experience

At WISE we believe that real-world, hands-on experiences have a major impact on girls who would never consider careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and Construction.

With this in mind, WISE works with industry to help them find sustainable ways of building their engagement with girls.

WISE has worked with many industrial partners including the Royal Navy, RAF, Brompton Bikes, Ministry of Defense and many more. These events have an excellent participation rate. Aware of the fact that all too often girls ‘can do it but would not want to be it’, the activities aim to engage girls’ hearts and minds. The physical familiarity with machines together with working in teams, is a win-win formula for engaging girls on an emotional level, transforming both their perception of themselves and engineering.

The Centre for Science Education has created a guide for creating work placements. This guide has been developed through the STEM Subject Choice and Careers Project. It is designed to help teachers, learners, employers and anyone involved in work experience develop strategies for creating good quality placements for young people age 14–19
