Gender Equality in STEM - Sheffield Hallam University

Gender Equality in STEM

A FREE UKRC One-Day Workshop for Careers Professionals in HE, FE and Adult Services

A national HE STEM Programme project

Careers professionals face increasing demands in the current economic climate and as we move towards the provision of an inclusive adult careers service. The UKRC works with industry, academia and the public sector to improve the participation of women pursuing STEM-related careers in science, engineering and technology (SET) and help address skills shortages in areas which are vital to the future economic prosperity of the country.

The need for positive and up-to-date information about the diversity of opportunities in STEM-related careers is key to overcoming gender stereotyping of roles and career paths. The UKRC is keen to support careers advisers in addressing some of these challenges and, as part of its support for the National HE STEM programme, is delivering specialist training on gender equality issues in SET for careers professionals working with adults and in higher and further education.

Aims and objectives

The aims of the programme is to:

· raise awareness of:

o the need for widening career choice for girls and women in science, engineering and technology (SET)

o factors affecting entry into non-traditional careers for women

o implicit and explicit stereotyping in careers guidance and education

· reflect on strategies to overcoming gender stereotyping when offering guidance or information to girls and women

At the end of the training session participants will have:

· updated their training with regard to gender equality

· identified the reason for the need to recruit more women into SET

· identified the barriers which can prevent women from entering and returning to employment in SET

· a greater awareness of the range of STEM-related careers and sources of LMI available

The workshop runs from 10.00 – 16.00 and is highly interactive and allows time for networking. All participants receive a detailed folder with practical information, exercises and case studies.

Who should attend

Careers advisers, employment advisers and placement officers in higher and further education institutions, adult IAG services and representatives of other careers support organisations.
